Vision score on the stats page — something most people don't know

If you're too bored to read the whole thing, just skip to the conclusion below.

I saw the post on the front page talking about vision score, so I figured I'd throw in my two cents. For reference, I'm around Gold 1–Plat 4 (based on my solo queue, flex queue, and normal game MMR).

In the image below, you can see my vision score on Nami at that level.

Anyway, my average vision score is 116.9, while Gold players average 99.6. I cut out the rest to keep this short, but Masters/Challengers average over 120, and Diamond/Grandmaster is around 115. Guess you guys just play support a lot better than I do, lol.

But I noticed a game where my score was 178.1, so I checked it out. 178 is hard to get even in a 50-minute game. Normally at 50 minutes, vision score is around 90–120, but here it was 178, you know?

That game lasted 52 minutes, and my vision score was 157. image.png

Yeah. Just from this alone, you can tell that the vision score shown in those stats is inflated. It seems like factors we don't fully understand, like game time and score relative to other roles, affect how vision score is calculated.

I checked other games: 13min win, 9pts → scaled to 36 26min loss, 48pts → scaled to 108 27min win, 52pts → scaled to 109 39min loss, 105pts → scaled to 155

Of course, I have about 170 Nami games (solo/ flex/ normals), so there might be some variation. And it also varies a bit depending on the champion. For example, with champions like Yuumi, it's harder to control vision, so if you try to get vision the same way as other supports, your score can be significantly higher.

So, the conclusion is: the score shown in those stats isn't your raw vision score; it's a vision score that's been scaled based on some criteria. Since there are multiple factors involved, like number of wards placed, wards cleared, control wards purchased, how much vision you provided, and how contested those areas were, it's hard to be completely objective.

A useful tip for you! When I play Nami, I usually: Buy a control ward about once every 2–3 minutes. Place about 1.3 wards per minute. I usually let others clear wards, but I still clear about one every 3–4 minutes on average. Hope this helps.

Also, since the number of wards placed and cleared by opponents varies by rank, there's also a difference in how vision score is gained between low and high ELO. In low ELO, players often neglect vision, while higher ELO players control it better. In short, a simple way to look at it is: in low ELO, getting a good vision score is about placing a lot of wards; in high ELO, it's about clearing a lot of them.

Conclusion:

  1. The vision score on the stats page is a recalculated/scaled result. It's almost always higher than the raw score.
  2. Good vision control is part of climbing the ranks.
  3. Your vision score goes up the longer you reveal enemies, the longer you stay alive, and the more you clear and place wards. Same goes for your rank, I guess lol."
