The Top of the Taj Mahal 타지마할 꼭대기
Introduction The Taj Mahal is a very famous building in India. Lots of people visit it every day. 소개 타지마할은 인도에 있는 아주 유명한 건물이에요. 매일 수많은 사람들이 이곳을 찾는답니다.
Mishu the little monkey lived with his mom, dad and ten brothers and sisters in the gardens of the Taj Mahal. 미슈는 엄마와 아빠, 그리고 10명의 형, 누나들과 함께 타지마할 정원에 사는 꼬마 원숭이에요.
Mishu thought the Taj Mahal was amazing. He loved the big white dome, the four tall towers and the gleaming pool. Mishu loved to run along the side of the pool as the fountains shot water into the air. One day, Mishu’s brothers and sisters were playing hide and seek in the trees. “Can I play?” asked Mishu. His brothers and sisters roared with laughter. “You can’t climb as high as we can,” they chuckled. “You’re too small!” 미슈는 타지마할이 정말 근사하다고 생각해요. 커다랗고 하얀 돔도, 4개의 높은 탑도, 반짝이는 연못도 마음에 꼭 들거든요. 미슈는 분수에서 물이 뿜어져 나올 때 연못 가장자리를 따라 달리는 걸 좋아해요. 어느 날, 미슈의 형과 누나들이 나무에서 숨바꼭질을 하고 있었어요. “나도 같이 해도 돼?” 미슈가 물었어요. 하지만 형과 누나들은 큰 소리로 웃음을 터뜨렸어요. “넌 우리처럼 높은 곳까지 올라가지 못하잖아.” 다들 깔깔대며 웃었어요. “넌 너무 작다고!”
Mishu stared sadly at his brothers and sisters. They never let him join in with their games. “I can climb higher than all of you!” boasted Mishu. “And I’m going to climb to the top of the Taj Mahal!” “You are a silly little monkey, the Taj Mahal is too big to climb!” sneered Mishu’s brothers and sisters. And they raced off, swinging from tree to tree. Mishu went to find his best friend, Kojo the parakeet. 미슈는 슬픈 눈빛으로 형과 누나들을 바라봤어요. 그들은 한번도 미슈를 놀이에 끼워준 적이 없어요. “나는 형, 누나들보다 더 높은 곳까지 올라갈 수 있어!” 미슈가 큰소리를 쳤어요. “그리고 타지마할 꼭대기까지 올라갈 거야!” “너 정말 바보구나. 타이마할은 너무 커서 올라갈 수가 없다고!” 미슈의 형과 누나들은 미슈를 비웃었어요. 그리고는 나무에서 나무로 건너뛰며 자기들끼리 멀리 가버렸어요. 미슈는 친한 친구인 앵무새 코조를 찾으러 갔어요.
“I’m going to climb to the top of the Taj Mahal!” Mishu told Kojo. Kojo almost fell out of the tree in shock. “But the Taj Mahal is as high as the sun in the sky!” she squawked. “I’m still going to try,” Mishu said. “Will you come with me?” Kojo flapped her wings. “Of course I will,” she replied. “Let’s go!” So Mishu and Kojo set off through the gardens to the Taj Mahal. “타지마할 꼭대기까지 올라갈 생각이야.” 미슈는 코조에게 말했어요. 코조는 너무 놀라서 나무에서 떨어질 뻔했지요. “하지만 타지마할은 하늘에 있는 태양만큼이나 높아!” 코조가 꽥꽥거렸어요. “그래도 노력해볼 거야.” 미슈가 말했어요. “너도 같이 갈래?” 코조는 날개를 퍼덕였어요. “당연히 같이 가야지.” 코조가 대답했어요. “가자!” 그래서 미슈와 코조는 정원을 지나 타지마할로 출발했어요.
“Are you off to climb the Taj Mahal, Mishu?” his sisters teased. “You need wings, like Kojo,” shouted his brothers. “Then you can fly to the top!” And they all burst out laughing. “I’ll show YOU!” Mishu exclaimed. “타지마할에 올라가려고 그러는 거니, 미슈?” 누나들이 놀렸어요. “그러려면 코조처럼 날개가 있어야 될 걸.” 형들이 소리쳤어요. “그러면 날아서 꼭대기까지 갈 수 있을 거야!” 그리고는 다들 웃음을 터뜨렸어요. “꼭 해낼 테니 두고 봐!” 미슈가 외쳤어요.
The Taj Mahal was closed that day. The fountains had been turned off and the pool was clear and still. Mishu could see the reflection of the Taj Mahal in the water. Mishu and Kojo went up to the Taj Mahal. It was taller than the tallest tree in the gardens. It looked bigger and bigger as they got closer and closer. Suddenly Mishu felt very small and scared. He took a deep breath . . . 그날은 타지마할 문을 열지 않는 날이었어요. 분수도 꺼지고 연못은 맑고 고요했지요. 미슈는 물에 비친 타지마할의 모습을 볼 수 있었어요. 미슈와 코조는 타지마할로 다가갔어요. 건물은 정원에 있는 가장 키 큰 나무보다 더 높이 솟아 있었어요. 가까이 다가갈수록 점점 더 거대해 보였지요. 갑자기 미슈는 자기가 아주 작게 느껴지면서 겁이 났어요. 미슈는 깊게 숨을 들이쉬었지요……
Mishu tried to jump onto the wall of the Taj Mahal. But the white stone was very smooth and very shiny, so Mishu just slid down the wall. “Try again, Mishu,” Kojo called. “But be careful.” Mishu tried again. And again. But every time, he slid back down. “You’re a brave monkey, Mishu,” said Kojo. “But the wall is too smooth and shiny to climb.” “I need another plan,” said Mishu. 미슈는 타지마할 벽으로 뛰어 오르려고 했어요. 하지만 흰색 돌 벽은 매우 매끄럽고 반짝거려서 미슈는 주르륵 미끄러져 내려왔어요. “다시 해봐, 미슈.” 코조가 외쳤어요. “하지만 조심해!” 미슈는 다시 시도했어요. 그리고 한번 더. 하지만 그때마다 계속 미끄러지기만 했지요. “넌 용감한 원숭이야, 미슈.” 코조가 말했어요. “하지만 이 벽은 기어 올라가기에는 너무 매끄럽고 반짝거려.” “다른 계획이 필요해.” 미슈가 말했어요.
Mishu sat down and thought for a while. “I’ve got it!” cried Mishu. “Kojo, will you fly me to the top of the Taj Mahal?” “Of course!” Kojo replied. “Grab onto my legs and don’t let go!” Mishu gripped Kojo’s legs with his paws. At last, he was going to the top of the Taj Mahal! Kojo flapped her wings, but she and Mishu didn’t fly up into the air. Kojo flapped her wings harder and harder, but nothing happened. 미슈는 앉아서 잠시 생각에 잠겼어요. “알았다!” 미슈가 외쳤어요. “코조, 나를 타지마할 꼭대기까지 좀 데려다 줄래?” “물론이지!” 코조가 대답했어요. ”내 다리를 꽉 잡고 절대 놓지 마!” 미슈는 손으로 코조의 다리를 잡았어요. 마침내 타지마할 꼭대기까지 갈 수 있게 된 거예요! 코조는 날개를 퍼덕였지만, 그녀와 미슈의 몸은 공중으로 떠오르지 않았어요. 코조는 계속해서 더 세게 날개를 퍼덕여봤지만 아무 일도 일어나지 않았지요.
Finally, Kojo gave up. “You’re too heavy for me, Mishu!” Kojo panted. “Thank you for trying to help,” Mishu said sadly. “I’ll never get to the top of the Taj Mahal now!” sighed Mishu. Mishu and Kojo walked home in silence. On the way, they passed the pool. Mishu noticed the reflection of the Taj Mahal in the water again, and this time, it gave him a wonderful idea! 마침내 코조는 포기했어요. “넌 너무 무거워, 미슈!” 코조가 숨을 헐떡이며 말했어요. “도와주려고 애써줘서 고마워.” 미슈는 슬픈 목소리로 말했어요. “난 이제 절대 타지마할 꼭대기에 가지 못할 거야.” 미슈는 한숨을 쉬었어요. 미슈와 코조는 조용히 집으로 걸어갔어요. 도중에 둘은 연못을 지나게 되었지요. 미슈는 물에 비친 타지마할의 모습을 다시 한번 쳐다봤는데, 이때 아주 멋진 아이디어가 떠올랐어요!
“Kojo, will you go and find my brothers and sisters?” Mishu asked. “Tell them I’m on top of the Taj Mahal!” Kojo looked puzzled. “But you’re NOT!” she squawked. “Just go and tell them!” laughed Mishu. Kojo didn’t know what Mishu was up to. But she flew off and found Mishu’s brothers and sisters playing in the trees. “Come quickly,” Kojo called. “Mishu is on top of the Taj Mahal!” “He can’t be!” the monkeys gasped. “코조, 가서 나의 형, 누나들을 찾아봐 줄래?” 미슈가 부탁했어요. “내가 타지마할 위에 있다고 말해줘!” 코조는 어리둥절한 표정을 지었어요. “하지만 못 올라갔잖아!” 코조가 꽥꽥거렸어요. “그냥 가서 그렇게 말해줘!” 미슈가 웃으며 말했어요. 코조는 미슈가 무슨 일을 벌이려는 건지 몰랐어요. 하지만 날아가서 나무에서 놀고 있는 미슈의 형과 누나들을 찾았지요. “빨리 와.” 코조가 불렀어요. “미슈가 타지마할 꼭대기에 있어!” “그럴 리가 없어!” 원숭이들은 헐떡거리며 말했어요.
The monkeys followed Kojo to the pool. Mishu was standing on one of the fountains. “Look at me!” Mishu yelled. “I’m on top of the Taj Mahal!” But Mishu’s brothers and sisters just looked very confused. “But you’re not on top of the Taj Mahal!” said one of Mishu’s brothers. “Oh, yes, I am!” said Mishu, grinning. “Look at the water!” The fountain was right on top of the reflection of the Taj Mahal! 원숭이들은 코조를 따라 연못으로 갔어요. 미슈는 분수들 중 하나 위에 서 있었어요. “날 봐!” 미슈가 소리쳤어요. “난 지금 타지마할 꼭대기에 있어!” 하지만 미슈의 형과 누나들은 매우 당황스러운 표정을 지었어요. “하지만 넌 타지마할 위에 올라가 있지 않잖아!” 미슈의 형들 중 한 명이 말했어요. “아니야, 올라갔다고!” 미슈가 씩 웃으며 말했어요. “물속을 봐!” 그 분수는 물에 비친 타지마할의 그림자 바로 위에 있었어요.
Everyone began to laugh.
“What a clever little monkey you are, Mishu,” said his brothers and sisters.
“You and Kojo can join in with our games from now on!”
“No,” Mishu laughed. “You can join in with our games!”
다들 웃기 시작했어요.
“너 정말 영리한 원숭이구나, 미슈.” 형과 누나들이 말했어요.
“이제부터 너와 코조도 우리가 노는 데 함께 낄 수 있어!”
“아니야.” 미슈가 웃었어요 “형이랑 누나들이 우리가 노는 데 끼는 거야!”
