&This guide covers standard ARAM, not Augmented ARAM, and is aimed at players who want to win in ARAM rather than just goof around.&

Lesson 3-1: When Should You Buy Guardian Items?

This section covers the first item decision you'll face once the game starts. Unlike Summoner's Rift, the Howling Abyss has no laning phase, no recalls, and non-stop fighting — which means every single item choice immediately impacts your performance. That's why the starting 1400 gold matters more than you might think. Rather than rushing a first-item component and hitting the lane, you need a plan that secures a solid turning point before your first death or right after it.

Guardian's Blade Guardian's Hammer Guardian's Orb Guardian's Horn  When you first jump into ARAM, Guardian items often look like this:

"Weird stat sticks," "Doran's-like items you buy before your real build," or a lot of people don't even know they exist.

But Guardian items are actually designed to fit ARAM's early-game structure perfectly. The reason ARAM starts you with 1400 gold is so you can buy a Guardian item (950 gold) plus one basic component like boots or a Null-Magic Mantle. (Null-Magic Mantle used to cost 450 gold.)

So when should you actually buy a Guardian item?

Guardian items are meant to patch up a champion's weak early game with insane gold efficiency. Basically, you should buy one if you think your team will lose early skirmishes or can't teamfight properly due to a stat gap.

why? = If you lose early fights because of a stat difference, you won't earn kill gold, you'll lose lane priority, and your gold income will fall behind. That means slower core items, lost towers, and a snowball that ends in a loss without a single comeback.

So you invest that 950 gold into a Guardian item to boost your stats and win early skirmishes. Now, which Guardian item should you pick?

There are four Guardian items in ARAM.

1. Guardian's Blade for Fighter Champions

image.png This item is absolutely insane value: it gives you about 2200 gold worth of stats (Long Sword, Ruby Crystal, Glowing Mote) for just 950 gold. The stats it provides — health, attack damage, and ability haste — are all immediately useful in early fights, making it the most impactful Guardian item.

Champions who take it: 1. Melee bruisers = Aatrox, Riven, Darius, etc. 2. AD casters = Jayce, Kha'Zix, Talon, Pantheon, etc. 3. ADCs with high spell value = Samira, Tristana, Xayah, etc.

2. Guardian's Hammer for Ranged Carries and Auto-Attack Bruisers image.png (Note: image link seems wrong? Original has 3177.png for Blade, but text says Hammer? Let's keep original URL as provided) image.png (Correcting to Hammer's image URL) Wait, original has
