1. You can still deal damage while using Zhonya's (e.g., Mordekaiser, Rumble, Swain)
2. You're an AP champion that dives in but can't get out (e.g., Gwen, Neeko)
3. You're an AP champion and if you survive, your team wins the game
That's the kind of situation where you get it.
But even though the price is high, it's a straight-up awesome item for raw stats, so if the enemy team has a lot of AD, I think it's worth considering.
궁타는쉔뒤에서들박Sure Shen has AP ratios, but he's got plenty of other tank items to build, so mages go Zhonya's as a damage-survival compromise since their damage lacks if they go full tank
+ When spinning your cooldown one more time gives you a survival tool

- Viktor Q or similar when a shield pops up and you can survive, etc etc
i've never bought zhonya's even once while playing league

It's good against champions like Zed and Kayn who mark you with their ultimate and then burst you down in one shot.

unless i need to initiate i never get it i just go full damage with the mindset of killing the ones who come for me first

you need armor and to dodge the enemy's important skill and when you're on a champ that can't dodge well you gotta use zhonya's to dodge
