People often get this wrong. When short parents have a tall kid, they think, "Oh, height isn't genetic, it's all about the environment." But the truth is, even if a child turns out completely different from their parents, it's still 100% genetics.

This is possible because there are such things as unexpressed genes. If a short parent carries unexpressed "tall genes" in their body and passes them down, they'll have a tall kid.

So, even if short parents have a tall child, it's not because of the environment; it's simply because the kid inherited those tall genes.

Basically, it doesn't matter if the parents are tall or short. What matters is whether they can pass on those tall genes to their offspring. That's what determines the child's height.

Since short parents can pass on tall genes, a child who looks nothing like their parents is still a product of genetics.

It's the same with intelligence. Two smart parents can have a dumb kid if unexpressed "dumb genes" from the parents' bodies get passed down. If the parents were straight-A students but the kid struggles, it's not necessarily because the kid isn't trying; it's because they inherited unexpressed dumb genes from their smart parents.

On the flip side, a smart kid can be born to dumb parents if they inherit unexpressed smart genes.

You sometimes hear these success stories about kids from poor families who made it big through sheer hard work. But if you look closely, it's usually not just effort—they just happened to inherit smart genes that were unexpressed in their poor parents.

And guess what? Effort is genetic too.

If you inherit "diligent genes" that make you prone to working hard, you'll put in the effort. If you inherit "lazy genes," you won't.

Genetics are so important that you could practically say they determine everything in this world.

Old people sometimes say stuff like "you can do anything if you just try hard enough," but they only say that because they don't understand how genetics actually work.

    I personally think effort is more about environmental factors than genetics. For example, if you're at a bottom-tier high school or university, you end up not studying because nobody around you does. But if you get into a prestigious school, humans are social creatures, so you eventually end up studying hard just to keep up with everyone else.

      you gotta look at it as genetics + environment deciding everything but even that environment is determined by your genes for example people with good genes end up in elite high schools while those with bad genes end up at bottom-tier schools so in the end your genes are what decide your environment

Personally, I think someone with bad genes who grew up in Daechi-dong (a famous high-end education district in Korea) would still get into a better high school or university than someone with good genes who grew up in a dangerous neighborhood.
